As a creator, I know, firsthand, how demanding a presence- based business can be, you just may not consistently realize it.
- You have to be the one that’s creating content with your voice on social media.
- You have to be the one that’s creating the videos.
- You have to be the one that’s putting up the content that people are dependent on connecting with.
This can definitely start to take a toll on you. Especially during days like the one I’m having right now. My allergies are currently killing me, and I’m feeling miserable. However, I owe a lot of people something related to content, and I feel obligated to still be present.
This is drastically different than some of our online counterparts who have businesses that are… well… hands-off.
They have a product that’s sold and consumed based off of some factor that is not tied to their energy.
There are other ways.
The Hidden Costs of a Presence-Driven Business
Constant Demand for High Energy:
Let’s start off by speaking about the amount of energy that’s needed for you to actually show up consistently, especially on social media.
Every day you have to be thinking about what type of content your audience is gonna resonate with, and then you have to look at this content that you’re putting out there, and you have to cross your fingers and hope that these platforms are going to expose it to the right people, and that those very people who are seeing it will actually engage with it. Otherwise, you’re gonna feel a way.
This all requires energy, energy that you are limited on.
The Risks of Burnout:
Now, one thing that can come out of you consistently expending this energy, is the risk of burnout. You’re gonna start to feel pressure to consistently show up and engage, and it ultimately affects your productivity, creativity and the enjoyment of the business.
You may have started out with a lot of energy because you’re not only wanted to generate revenue and build your income, but you also wanted to impact people. That can be exciting at first but overtime it will start to be… Draining.
Especially, when you have certain lifestyle trade-offs that you’re starting to realize. One big one is if you have a family. If you’re one of those individuals who has kids, then you’re probably gonna feel the impact a bit more than many. The time and energy that you have to spend giving to the business is going to ultimately impact the time and energy that you have left over to be able to support your family.
All of this can be… Draining.
2. The Growing Appeal of Scalable, Less Hands-On Income Streams
Now enough about the challenges, let’s talk about some of the solutions and some of the other elements of business that can support you without you having to expand all of your energy. Any upcoming sections, I’m gonna speak about three primary offerings that could support your business and require less energy.
Digital Products as Passive Assets:
Digital products are, of course, one of the first and most profitable ones that come to mind. Now I understand that people buy digital products very differently than they did in the past, how are up to you to be creative so that you’re able to still consistently provide the value that they seeking and to align it with what their expectations are on the other side o purchasing any of these.
A digital product can be an e-book a course a template, a challenge or anything else that can serve as an automated deliverable once they make a purchase.
All of these deliverables do not require your time except for when you’re creating the actual deliverable.
There are plenty of entrepreneurs that will capture their thoughts organize it in a way that aligns with the way that they teach, and they’ll sell it as a digital product.
Digital products can also help with minimizing the risk associated with people working with you. I’ll dive into that risk mitigation discussion in a separate block post.
Affiliate Marketing as a Low-Pressure Revenue Stream:
Introduce affiliate marketing as a way to earn through recommendations without the need to create physical products or provide constant live updates.
Affiliate marketing is another type of offering that you can provide that enables you to have a low pressure revenue stream. Affiliate marketing is when you make commissions off of various products that are sold that someone else created and is responsible for delivering. Over 90% of businesses have some type of affiliate/Referral marketing program. All of this presents you with the opportunity to create a means to communicate with an audience and sell them something that you don’t have to take the time to create.
Less Personal Exposure, More Flexibility:
How Digital Products and Affiliate Marketing Work Together
Now… you can combine affiliate programs and digital products in a way that can help you amplify your business revenue.
I’ll save the depth of this topic for a separate Block post as well, however, one example could be an e-book that you created, outlining how to do or gain a particular skill, and within the e-book you have a number of affiliate links to various products and offerings that you may be recommending your customer to purchase. So you generate revenue through the purchase of the e-book or resource, and you also generate revenue anytime any of your affiliate links drive revenue.
